Painting Classes

Classes are starting up for 2024! Please be sure to bookmark this page and check back regularly as we get new classes online. We hope you can be patient with us while we are transitioning to new registration software – if you need to register for a class but don’t see it online yet, you can email or call to save your spot!

Cancellation Policy:  Occasionally classes must be cancelled.  We understand that this may be a disappointment to our visitors and we’ll do our best to inform students as early as we are aware of the cancellation.  Many of our workshops are led by instructors who have to come a long distance or prepare a lot of supplies, so if a minimum enrollment is not met, the class will be cancelled.

If Oliver Art Center cancels a class, we’ll make every attempt to inform students and to offer a full refund or credit towards another course.

If a student must withdraw from a class a full refund less $10 processing fee will be issued if cancellation is received at least one week prior to the first day of class.

Basics of Watercolor using Abstraction - Workshop with Rocco Pisto

The most effective way to truly understand watercolor is first to learn the properties of the paint and how each color combines to create new and unique colors.  In order to do that, we'll be working abstractly, so the focus is on the tools and techniques and not on the subject matter and composition.  We will be exploring the medium itself and some tips and tricks to help make your paintings sing.  We'll also work with a variety of brushes to learn different brush strokes, various wash techniques, color blending, wet-on-wet painting, dry brush painting, detail tape and resists, and experiment a bit with india ink.

Recommended supplies listed below. Feel free to bring your own favorites, but this class works best with liquid watercolors.  If you would like to order a kit from the instructor, please call Oliver Art Center prior to one week before class.  If you register after that, but still want a kit, please call and inquire whether we still have any available.

Supplies:

  1. Several sheets of watercolor paper (recommend: Canson Watercolor Paper, 140 LB, Cold Pressed)
  2. Various watercolor type paintbrushes, including a large "mop brush". These can be purchased at any art supply, in
varying sizes and types of your preference. (Make sure you purchase watercolor brushes
    – they hold water differently than acrylic or oil brushes.)
  3. A “mixing dish” to create unique color variations of paint.
  4. A palette
  5. Quality, light-fast watercolor paints. (Recommend: Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolor Tubes). https://www.amazon.com/Winsor-Newton-Cotman-Watercolour-20-Mulitcoloured/dp/B08NK1BR8B/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2BYSGGQ143Z3X&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3xunQYwUE0biqmXBdh2iHoPt-Heyx7S2L9_F0OIRnd9jci4Lvi6dOn-ya8GG6q7Hp_UsCBHNWhtvq3LK_pb6xC_DO_zcPNjDYzLX144L5ICDYxYRuBKLn3PPpY6K4SGbiPi-ZqOzou0ZfME88uY5rtxgxeamncMZgwZr22P8eyImV-3tLH2sWeMu8AiraCJfCs6Px7lfdSTlMymxjqpZFaNgPUZ_PAE_zQ_1paVm30Ow7yTJ-Ju9_bVl_Xry6hKBH0Lin18zLtk4LR4FOoC55NXY-pxnaox2Hcl5MdE0YuU.tjIwbdh_wQBvEySyWPhUpEdWzj-4Q0NW1jEMUT_pCAM&dib_tag=se&keywords=winsor%2Band%2Bnewton%2Bwatercolor%2Bpaint&qid=1713553761&sprefix=winsor%2Ba%2Caps%2C88&sr=8-5&th=1
